While the aboriginal tribes were the original landowners, white settlers began to populate the area in the 1830s. Sydney Road was, and remains, the main thoroughfare in Brunswick. It wasn’t really until the “Goldrush Era” that the city’s development and population really started to take off. Brunswick began to get a name in the world. People were coming from all over to try for their fortune. Some of the amazing buildings that were erected during that time still stand today. They tell the story of the early settlers and the town’s history. It wasn’t until 1908 that Brunswick officially became a city.
Brunswick is very diverse. There are residents from all of the world who have come to call it their home. There are also many religions and places of worship. Diversity is important to the people. It is welcomed and encouraged. Having a good time is also part of the Brunswick culture. There are many excellent pubs in town to entertain residents and visitors. Nightclubs and social clubs are popular. When it comes to sports, soccer, tennis and cricket are all very popular. There are two soccer teams in town and they are highly supported by the locals. The major sporting arenas in the city are Clifton Park, Gilpin Park and the impressive Gillon Oval.
As previously stated, the city of Brunswick has preserved much of its history through the buildings and landmarks in town. Old structures tell of times past. The Brunswick Tram Depot and the incredible bluestone warehouses located on Colebrook Street are both important landmarks. Visitors should not miss out on these sights. They are fascinating and interesting to explore. Take a walk and observe the divine churches and places of worship in town. The architecture is beautiful. The newer architecture is also very impressive.
Brunswick may be just outside of the busy region of Melbourne, but the city has earned a name for itself. It is a great city full of happy and active people.
